North Carolina-based Duke Energy, a Fortune 500 power giant that serves 4.5 million American households, is proposing a $600 million wind farm on 24,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management property east of Searchlight, about 50 miles south of Las Vegas. Duke's Searchlight Wind Energy Project would generate 370 megawatts of electricity -- enough to power more than 90,000 homes. The 420-foot turbines would be visible from Searchlight, from U.S. Highway 95 and from parts of Lake Mohave. Duke recently held a public meeting about the project. The Interim Finance Committee, a panel of lawmakers who oversee budget issues when the Legislature is not in session, approved the initial budget Thursday. It includes a $110,000 annual salary for an energy commissioner and a $53,000 annual salary for an executive assistant. TONOPAH -- Kyle Chisholm, director of research and development, for OHm Geothermal LLC, thinks his plan to search for geothermal energy on county property in Gabbs could be a win-win situation.
NV Energy, Inc. According to page 80 of the June 11, 2009 edition of "USDA Forest Service American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Projects" the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City has been awarded a $620,000 grant for upgrades to their 1 megawatt biomass plant, including two bins for hauling material to site, and an onsite chipper. That grant was largely the effort of Tom Baker, a longtime advocate for biomass utilization here Nevada. Tom, a charter member of the Nevada Woody Biomass Collaborative, is currently engaged as a fuel procurement specialist for NORESCO, the contracted operator of the facility.
Washoe County commissioners today approved a resolution to sponsor a regional planning amendment to create a new utility corridor for wind turbines in the mountains of Warm Springs Valley. The 17-mile route would be for a 120-kilovolt line to bring power from up to 70 wind turbines that Nevada Wind wants to put on Virginia Peak to a major power transfer station to the south in Tracy.
